Day of the Dead Calaveras

Janitizio, Michoacán is famous for its Day of the Dead celebrations. The celebrated traditions of November 1 and 2, All Saints Day and All Souls Day, range from trading sugared skulls with friends, creating altars to loved ones in homes, sprucing up grave sites, and sharing satirical poems about local politicians with anyone who will listen. Catrins, elegantly dressed calaveras or skeletons, have become a popular form of folk art in clay and papier maché. They are intended to remind us that no one, rich or poor, can escape death.
Our Calaveras or Catrines are handcrafted of papier mache, in Patzcuaro, coastal town of the island Janitizio. Each stands approximately 19 inches with hats. Each is carefully and expertly packaged by an certified packer to insure that each catrina arrives undamaged. Enjoy this popular folk art from Mexico in your home.
